Renovation + Interior Design Project:
Mont Albert Residence

MONT ALBERT, VICTORIA

A beautiful Art Deco residence in Melbourne’s leafy Eastern suburbs, this home is the pinnacle of understated luxury living.

Michael engaged a builder to renovate his dated Art Deco family home but didn’t know how to brief the Builder on creating a spacious, comfortable and stylish home.

One of the critical briefs was designing a modern and beautiful home that his two teenagers would enjoy entertaining in. Keeping them close to home was the main priority, followed by the ability to entertain his own family, friends and clients.

Based in Hong Kong during the renovation, Michael engaged Yelda Adal-Hall to design all of the interiors and Project Manage the build working with the construction company.

The design included a new Kitchen, Lounge Room where period features were kept original, Master Bedroom, WIR, Ensuite, Living , Alfresco, custom skylight design, Pantry, Laundry, a Wet Bar (including 2 wine fridges), bespoke Joinery, including an Entertainment unit, Powder, Guest Bedroom and the first-floor bedrooms and Rumpus Room.

Yelda was responsible for space planning, tile selection, flooring, window furnishings, paint colours, light fittings, door handles, and construction-related decisions.

Following the construction phase of the renovation, each of the rooms were decorated to complete the Design & Decoration process. Starting with the Casual Living area, Belle sourced sofas, rugs and accessories to suit the space.

The formal lounge was next with a “James Bond meets Suzie Wong” design brief, followed by the Master Bedroom, which needed a “Boudoir meets Gatsby” design – a retreat reflecting the client’s personality and taste.

The transformations continued to transform the dilapidated outdoor shed into a teenage hangout/contained guest house. That design is a miniature version of the original home with a nod to this space’s “outbuilding” nature through Colorbond steel cladding and Spotted Gum in Shiplap.

“My brief was to turn a tired front lounge room into a sassy entertainer where chic and sparkle were licensed to mingle freely with comfort and warmth. My teenage children now love retreating to the room for some peace (they never used it before), whilst every adult yearns for a G&T upon entry to savour the surrounds. Bang on budget. Bang on brief.

Yelda, I want to tell you, I just walked into my bedroom and my God it’s amazing!! Sometimes when you least expect it, things can hit you, and I just had one of those moments. My room is just so cool, so comforting, a haven, a happy place, a safe place, a peaceful place, a mindful place, a Michael place. Thank you so much. Love your work!”
